Wessuc's biosolids beneficial use program is unique in the level of service and quality of workmanship we provide. With our land application programs we work with our growers on a daily basis. Wessuc land application managers are always in search of eligible fields and work with the farmers nutrient management plans and crop rotation.

Land application of biosolids has many agricultural, environmental and economic benefits. These include:

Nitrogen

We are surrounded by nitrogen. The air we breathe for example is made up of 78% nitrogen. So why apply nitrogen to soil? Nitrogen is required in large amounts by plants for growth and the gaseous nitrogen that surrounds us is unavailable to them. The nitrogen must first be converted to ammonium or nitrate. This form of nitrogen is the primary nitrogen supplied in biosolids which makes it an excellent source for this essential nutrient, providing up to 120 lb/acre.

Phosphorus

Phosphorus is another essential nutrient for plants. It plays an important role in photosynthesis, plant metabolism, cell division, DNA and membrane structure. As with nitrogen, much of the phosphorus in the soil is unavailable to plants. In any given year, plants will use up to 30% of the phosphorus applied as fertilizer or supplement. The biosolids Wessuc spreads are an excellent source of phosphorus providing up to 200 lb/acre.

micro - Nutrients

Seven of the eleven "Heavy Metals" that are in biosolids are actually micro-nutrients essential for plant growth. Micro-nutrients does not refer to a lesser role in plant development but rather a lesser quantitative presence in the soil. Zinc, Nickel, Selenium, Molybdenum, Copper and Cobalt are all essential for plant growth and all provided in biosolids. Levels for all micro-nutrients must meet safe limits established in the Nutrient Management Act.

Organics and more

Soil organic matter is a key part of the nutrient cycle, holding soil moisture and maintaining soil structure. Biosolids are organic in origin and treated through an organic process. It follows then that biosolids are an excellent source of organic matter. Proper use of biosolids as an organic source will provide improved soil fertility, soil structure, moisture retention and permeability. Aside from this biosolids also provide a liquid source for the crop as well as other micro-nutrients not regulated in the Nutrient Management Act such as manganese, magnesium, calcium, iron, and boron.

GPS System

Application systems

The common way to accomplish a variable rate application is to adjust the rates by restricting the flow through the applicator. The issue with this form of variable rate application is unacceptable when large volumes of liquid need to be managed. Wessuc spreads over 500,000 m3 per year on over 5,000 acres and is unwilling to allow our flow rates to be restricted.

Wessuc application system

Wessuc's unique system works by adjusting the speed of the tractor based on the flow rates through the dragline. Rather than restricting the flow rate the speed of the tractor is adjusted to alter the application rate. Our system is unique to Wessuc and is the only one of it's kind in the world.

Flow metered

The flow through the system is monitored with a regular flow meter. The readings are passed along to a GPS unit which in turn monitors the speed and adjusts the speed based on the desired application rate and actual flow rate.

GPS recorded

The application rate is recoded on a GPS system and is easily transferred to a computer for the printing of maps, boundaries, flags, and additional reports. Wessuc may then provide this information to the farmer, who if capable can use thegps electronic file as input into their combine's GPS unit for yield monitoring and nutrient application comparisons.

Protective measures

Soil type, field slope, crop residue, crop schedule, water courses, field tile inlets, spreading method, proximity to neighbours and other environmentally sensitive features all play a role in how a field is managed and determine how or if a field can receive biosolids. The site conditions and management plan are presented for approval prior to spreading. Setbacks from sensitive features are established based on the regulations set forth in the Nutrient Management Act. These are just some of the required conditions which are essential for the safe application of biosolids.

Nutrient Management Act (NMA)

As of January 2011 each site that receives biosolids is approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Historically this task was completed by the Ministry of the Environment through a Certificate of Approval process. That system was replaced under the Nutrient Management Act to account for better nutrient management on agricultural land through the issuing of approved Non-Agricultural Source Material (NASM) plans. The nutrient management plans will account for all nutrients the grower will use, either organic or commercial sources. In this way excessive nutrient loading of fields which may cause environmental impairment will be eliminated.

Tech License

Wessuc takes it's responsibility as environmental stewards very seriously. Licensed technicians operate equipment at each of the sites. Every field is flagged to ensure setbacks are maintained. The operators are provided aerial maps of the site highlighting sensitive features, and the application to each site is GPS mapped providing a record of the site volume, weather conditions, timing, application rate, injection depth, and site topography. Wessuc's flow controlled spreading units ensure an even application rate regardless of topography or flow rate.

OMAFRA & MoECC

Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change

Starting in 2011, as the focus of biosolids management moves toward a holistic nutrient management approach, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) will be reviewing and approving NASM plans. OMAFRA is closely tied to the agricultural community and well placed to ensure biosolids nutrients are effectively managed throughout the province. Concurrently the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) will be focusing their attention on the adherence of contractors and growers to the conditions set forth both in NASM plans and Nutrient Management plans.
